Although we have all heard this song many times, and many places, I would suggest
listening very closely to
the timing of the chords, and the vocal lines. You can listen to the whole song by

Vocal Line: What Ascend The Hill essentially uses as the chorus, is not what we are use
to hearing. It just
only the first line, "Then sings my soul" repeated four times. Not to mention it is sang
differently both
times it's played.
Chord Progression: Although you could leave out all of the D's from the verses, I would
suggest not. Ascend
he Hill attempts to make this original by changing the timing between chords, as well as
the chords
themselves. The more you make it easier, the more you simply allow it to be more like
the original. The
trickiest part about this progression is the short D's. Let's look at the first line
with count-time:

Now what I have done, is put the number that should be counted as it is sang. If you
were to listen to the
song and count, "1, 2, 3, 4, 1," etc..., starting with 1 over God, these numbers would
correspond with the
timing of the words being sang. The reason I point this out, is that in typically songs
in 4/4--like this
one--all of the chords are stared on 1 and played through 2, 3, and 4, until you switch
chords on 1 again. If
I was to put Chords above the numbers, it would look like this.
