MCDONALD'S GIRL
by Barenaked Ladies
Tag-team transcription by Stephen Denommee , Alexander
Haird , and Dan Amrich (DanAmrich@aol.com)
The chords and lyrics for this song were originally transcribed by Stephen
Denommee in November 1995 and later partially corrected
by Alexander Haird in March 1996. In January of '99 I
decided to clean it up a bit more, fix a few errors, and add the guitar and
bass tab. Despite the appearance of three transcribers, the song is not
difficult to play and proves instantly rewarding to beginners.
Stephen noted in his original file: "Here's a song that BNL only does in
concert. There is one known recording of the song, it belongs to CFNY, the
alternative music station in Toronto, Ontario, Canada." The song has made the
rounds as a bootleg and an MP3 (check http://bnl.kosmig.org for a copy, under
the Casby Showcase). I hope BNL eventually puts it on wax!
There has been some debate over whether the progression is D-G-A or D-A-G, and
the truth is that it's *both*. Listen closely and follow along...

INTRO (and successive vamps/fills--listen to it for the strum pattern):
D A G A D G A D (beginning of repeat)
E --2--0--3----0--2--3--0-------------------2---|
B --3--2--0----2--3--0--2-------------------3---|
G --2--2--0----2--2--0--2-----------------0-2---|

E --------3----------3--------------------------|
VERSE:
D A G A
I leave from softball practice every night
D G A G D
It's getting dark, but the "Golden Arches" light up the way
A G A
I turn the corner at the traffic light
D G A G Bm
I count my money and then I rehearse what I'm going to say
Bm Bm
"I'd like an order of fries, a Quarter Pounder with cheese,
G A
I love the light in your eyes, will you go out with me please?"
[Dan's Note: Stephen had noted an Em in the pre-chorus above, but it ain't
there--the bass that does a descending line which makes it sound like the
guitar is moving too, but Ed stays on Bm the whole time.]

CHORUS:
D A G A
I am in love with a McDonald's girl
D G A G
She has a smile of innocence so tender and warm
D A G A
I am in love with a McDonald's girl
D G A G D G A
She is an angel in a polyester uniform
("Can I get you some fries with that?")
She doesn't try to impress anyone
She doesn't act real tough like all the other girls that I know
She don't treat me like a simpleton
She's not ashamed to be the only other virgin I know
When my hamburger's cold, I get up ready to go,
She's only fifteen years old, and I'm in love with her soul
(Steve Page Rap Solo)
She's got a gold tooth, you know she's hardcore
She'll show you a good time, then she'll show you the door...BOY!
CHORUS
There she stands behind the register
She's taking orders from the Saddle River Little League
If they knew how much I wanted her
Their home-room teachers would have to send them home for a week
As I head through the door, the movement catches her eye,
My heart begins to soar, she smiles, she waves good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye, good byeeeeeeeeeeeeee
CHORUS
Uno, dos, tres, quatro
Big Mac, Filet-o-Fish, Quarter Pounder, French Fries
Icey Coke, Thick Shakes, Sundaes and Apple Pies
Sing that song of taste (yeah, sing that song of taste, G!)
You can only find at one place: McDonald's!
CHORUS and end
** BASS **
The recording is muffled so this may not be exact, but it will get you through.
This is just the basics--no grace notes, no precise rhythms--but I will try to
get the spacing right so you know when each note is played.
