The song is a cover from Arthur Alexander, also author of
A SHOT OF RHYTHM AND BLUES, YOU BETTER MOVE ON and SOLDIER
OF LOVE, among other hits. This version by The Beatles is
more defined than the original, which also had a string
arrangement . The Beatles recorded it at a higher pitch for
John, who, although at first sounds as If he's got a cold,
delivers a great vocal part, more varied and confident than
Alexander's and with some very smart rhythm changes too.
This, like the rest of the covers on PLEASE PLEASE ME (ANNA,
BOYS, CHAINS and TWIST AND SHOUT) were recorded live without
any overdubs, with the exception of the celesta recorded by
Martin on BABY IT'S YOU, to reinforce its guitar solo.
