What I have transcribed is not the original album version, but instead what
was played live (spectacularly) on the A Trick Of the Tail tour.
Some portions of the song were shortened from the original, but all the
song segments are still present.
The orchestration was as follows:
Steve Hackett: Lead rhythm guitar
Mike Rutherford: 12-String and bass pedals
Phil Collins: Vocals, whistling, tambourine
Tony Banks: mellotron, organ, Arp pro soloist(for flute parts)
Bill Bruford: Drums, percussion, Gong.
For portions of the song, Steve and Mike play very different parts.
But occasionally, their parts are quite similar. In these instances,
I have transcribed one guitar for these sections.
Equipment/technique
Well, I actually know what was toted along for the ATOTT tour, and this
song is pretty straightforward. Hackett is playing his Les Paul Gold
Top through a MXR Phase 90. Rutherford is playing his doubleneck, though
only the 12-string. (Banks covered the only bass part played live.) That's
it. No effects clicked on or off, no instrument changes.
Rutherford utilised a playing technique to achieve a pizzicato string effect to
his tremolo picking on this song and other early Genesis songs. (The Musical Box
comes to mind.) I am uncertain about the exact execution, but here are three
different ways that all yield similar results:
1. "Bow" the strings with the pick angled, with rapid wrist movements. (This creates
surface noise on electric guitars, but works great with acoustics.)
2. Rapidly strum the strings with your middle and index fingers, alternating each.
I have been told that's what Rutherford did, and Hackett does this in the closing
seconds of "Los Endos" on "The Tokyo Tapes".
3. Just Tremolo strum! (It's a bit noisy though....)
