There is another (easier) way to play it and I believe it is the way Mike Einziger 
(Incubus guitarist) plays it.
The tuning is different this time : D,A,D,A (Down tune the 4th string 3½ steps lower, 
the 3rd one 2½ steps lower and the 2nd one a step lower)
