It is some kind od difficult to explain how it goes, but very simple to play when understood.

(1st), (2nd), (3rd), and (4th) 

means the first, second, third and fourth time you stroke the bass string.

So when adding the text to sing along, just know when to start singing
by remembering which stroke it goes.
