============
In between some fairly successful local bands and his work with Lou Reed and then
Alice Cooper (and Aerosmith, Burton Cummings, KISS, Meat Loaf, Steve Perry, Ringo
Starr, Etta James, Peter Gabriel, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Air Supply, Hall &
Oates, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and many more), Dick Wagner
formed, with ex-Amboy Duke bassist Greg Arama, Ursa Major. They released only one,
self-titled album. On it were several works which almost certainly served to attract
the attention of his future collaborators, in terms of both production (he helped
Cooper put together the video version of Welcome To My Nightmare) and musicianship
(he penned one of the most covered rock songs of all time, "Only Women Bleed").
The first cut was an astounding proto-heavy metal exposition called "Sinner", done
almost entirely in Locrian mode, a feat rarely attempted and probably never equalled
in the 4 decades since. It's the kind of song that a musician doesn't listen to, they
experience it. The second cut follows in transcription, a rock ballad with a superb
mix of acoustic and electric sound and technique, called "In My Darkest Hour". Sample
these in download or YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3A_VWMg9HM (and others
listed on that page) if you need to in order to be convinced, but if you do, honor
the artist by buying it, it's well worth it. In My Darkest Hour is also available
on Wagner's compilation CDs Full Meltdown and Rock History http://www.wagnermusic.com/
