I tabbed the acoustic guitar, the solo guitar for the main parts, the bass, and,
during the bridge, an extra rhythm electric guitar supposed to play the part of
the piano. So this is a simplified version since I did not tab the bridges when
only the piano is heard.
Two different versions were issued : the complete one from LET IT BLEED with the
choir of the intro and a shorter one issued in 'HOT ROCKS, the London Years '
in which the choir has disappeared and the second verse is skipped. This latter
must have been issued at the time on a single, I think.
The first verse is played with only an acoustic guitar that is tuned in open E
that is from low to high E - B - E - G# - B - E. This guitar is heard throughout
the whole tune and (fortunately enough !) remains tuned like that ! But in
that first verse a brass instrument is heard behind the acoustic guitar which
is a French Horn. I tabbed it as if played by a guitar on the bass strings but
you must add much reverb to achieve that long distance effect that the French
Horn is supposed to bring as in, for example, those western movies soundtracks.
A slow attack is also necessary. Of course the French Horn produces many more
specific harmonics.
The solo guitar is in standard tuning. So is the rhythm electric one (= very
partly replaces the piano) that plays only full chords of C and F once per
bar except in the bridge. The Cs and Fs are played very simply down the neck
at first then up the neck in the course of the tune : so I did not tab the
rhythm guitar all along. I added detune effect to it to make it out.
Remember to tune the acoustic guitar in open E as shown above and to put a
capo on fret 8.
