Hi folks, I thought I'd waste a bit of time doing some tabbing (I had some
exams, you see) - here's the results.
Thanks to Arabella Clauson (arabella@mail.utexas.edu), Anthony Watson
(dwatson@merle.acns.nwu.edu) and Jan Kaestner (j3kaes01@fsrz1.uni-passau.de)
whose transcriptions I used as a starting point.
Comments, corrections and suggestions welcome.
Enjoy!

Past the arms of the familiar and their talk of better days

To the comfort of the strangers, slipping out before they say "so long"
E
Baby loves to run
She counts out all her money in the taxi on the way to meet her plane
And stares hopeful out the window
at the workers fighting through the pouring rain
She's searching through the stations for an unfamiliar song
And she's thinking 'bout all the places where she knows she still belongs
And she smiles the secret smile because she knows exactly how to carry on
So run baby run baby run baby run baby run
Run baby run baby run baby run baby run
From the old familiar faces and their old familiar ways
To the comfort of the strangers, slipping out before they say "so long"
Baby loves to run
(Same chords as first half of verse)
She's searching through the stations for an unfamiliar song
And she pictures all the places where she knows she still belongs
And she smiles the secret smile that shows she knows exactly how to carry on
So run baby run baby run baby run baby run (repeat to fade)

I think there's actually two electric guitars on the recording, but they're
doing much the same thing as each other. During the verse, they're playing
something along these lines

LEAVING LAS VEGAS
-----------------
G /A /B Csus2 G/B A7sus Dsus D
Life springs eternal on a gaudy neon street
Not that I care at all
I spent the best part of my losing streak in an Army Jeep
For what I can't recall
Oh I'm banging on my tv set and I check the odds and I, and I place my bet
I pour a drink and I pull the blinds - I wonder what I'll find
I'm leaving Las Vegas, the lights so bright
Palm sweat blackjack on a Saturday night
Leaving Las Vegas
Leaving for good, for good
I'm leaving for good
I'm leaving for good
Used to be I could drive up to Barstow for the night
Find some crossroad trucker to demonstrate his might
But these days it seems nowhere is far enough away
So I'm leaving Las Vegas today
I'm leaving Las Vegas, oh, the lights so bright
Blackjack on a Saturday night
I'm leaving Las Vegas
I'm leaving for good
I'm leaving for good
Em
For good
I'm standing in the middle of the desert
G G/B
Waiting for my ship to come in
Em
But now no joker, no jack, no king
Csus2 D
Can take this loser hand and make it win
I'm leaving Las Vegas, oh
I'm leaving Las Vegas for good
For good
I quit my job as a dancer at the Lido des Girls
Dealing blackjack until one or two
Such a muddly line between the things you want
And the things you have to do
I'm leaving Las Vegas, the lights so bright
Palm sweat blackjack on a Saturday night
Leaving Las Vegas
I'm leaving for good
I'm leaving for good
Oh, I'm leaving Las Vegas, the lights so bright
Palm sweat blackjack on a Saturday night
I'm leaving Las Vegas
I'm leaving for good
I'm leaving for good
Oh, I'm leaving Las Vegas, the lights so bright on a Saturday night
G Csus2 G Csus2 etc
I'm leaving Las Vegas
And I won't be back, no I won't be back

The bass, acoustic and electric guitars each play repeating parts throughout
the most of this.
There is a two bar drum introduction and then the bass comes in with

(Palm muting throughout)
For the chorus, the electric plays more - without the palm muting and
possibly uses fuller chords.
The bass line for the bridge section goes like this
+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
|-------|---------|-------|---------|-------|---------|-------|------------|

typing these parts up (sorry)

This song is a bit of a swine to transcribe - it doesn't involve any
difficult playing techniques, but it does involve a lot of guitars jumping
in and out of the mix. The following is an approximation of the main guitar
parts.
Guitar 1 plays the following riff twice for the introduction, and then four
times for the first verse.

There are at least three guitars on the recording here (not counting the
spectacular bass-line). There are two electrics, one on each side, and some
acoustic stuff too. The left electric plays with the chords as shown above
in a suitably funky manner -
+ + + +
|------9/10-10-10-10----10----------10----9/10-|
|------9/10-10-10-10----10----------10----9/10-|
|------9/10-10-10-10----10----------10----9/10-| etc
|----------------------------------------------|
|----------------------------------------------|
|----------------------------------------------|
(compression makes this sound well cool)
Meanwhile, the right electric plays this repeatedly -
+ + + + + + + +
|-------15-13-----------------|-------15-13-------------|
|-------------15--------13h15-|-------------15----------|
|-----------------------------|-------------------------|
|-----------------------------|-------------------------|
|-----------------------------|-------------------------|
|-----------------------------|-------------------------|
When you get to the G7 chord , the two electrics keep on with what they're
doing, but an acoustic slide guitar does this -
+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|
|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|
|/12----------|/12----------|/12----------|/12----------|
|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|
|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|
|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|
Then an acoustic guitar (I'm not sure whether or not it's the same one -
you could give the part to one or both of the electric guitars since they
drop out here) plays the chords in much the same way as the left guitar was
doing up to now -
+ + + +
|------10---10-10-------10----10-10---10-10----|
|------9----9--9--------9-----9--9----9--9-----|
|------10---10-10-------10----10-10---10-10----| etc
|----------------------------------------------|
|----------------------------------------------|
|----------------------------------------------|
When you reach the Dm chord, the electrics go back to what they were doing,
and the acoustic plays
+ + + + + + + +
|-----10--10------------------|-----10--10------------------|
|/10----10--10----------------|/10----10--10----------------|
|-------------7--/10----------|-------------7--/10----------|

|-----------------------------|-----------------------------|
+ + + + + + + +

|-------------7--/10----9-----|-------------7--/10-9--7-----|
|-----------------------------|-----------------------------|
|-----------------------------|-----------------------------|
|-----------------------------|-----------------------------|
After the second verse, this becomes
+ + + + + + + +
|-----10--10------------------|-----10--10------------------|

That's right, A the whole way through! - I always suspected that three
chord rock and roll was complicating things unnecessarily...
There's no guitar on this song at all, so just strum along.
However, I'm not too sure whether or not anybody in the States will have
this, but there was a free limited edition live CD released with the album
over here recorded at the BBC studios in London, which finishes with the
song "Volvo Cowgirl" - this is just The Na-na song with different chords
put to it. I'll transcribe it if anyone's interested...

There is one guitar on the recording (probably a telecaster with a bit of
slapback echo for extra coolness) which comes in on the line "You're a very

It's apropos of nothing, he says his name is William,
but I'm sure he's Bill or Billy or Mac or Buddy
And he's plain ugly to me and I wonder if he's
ever had a day of fun in his whole life
We are drinking beer at noon on Tuesday
in a bar that faces a giant car wash
The good people of the world are washing their cars on their lunch break
hosing and scrubbin as best they can in skirts in suits

E C7 B7
All I wanna do is have some fun, until the sun comes up over Santa Monica Blvd
I like a good beer buzz early in the morning
And Billy likes to peel the labels from his bottles of Bud
He shreds them on the bar then he lights every match in an oversized pack
letting each one burn down to his
thick fingers before blowing and cursing them out
and he's watching the bottles of Bud as they spin on the floor
And a happy couple enters the bar
Dangerously close to one another
The bartender looks up from his want ads
All I wanna do is have some fun, I got a feeling I'm not the only one
All I wanna do is have some fun, I got a feeling I'm not the only one
All I wanna do is have some fun, until the sun comes up over Santa Monica Blvd

Otherwise the bar is ours,
The day and the night and the car wash too
The matches and the Buds and the clean and dirty cars
The sun and the moon, but

There are two guitars on the recording - one is an acoustic which strums the

its picking noise) and the other is an electric which plays the funky intro

................
Weird jazzy chord city! I've tried to transcribe an accurate representation
of most of the chords, but understand that most of the chords for the verse
would have been improvised over the vague guidelines of Am followed by E7.
Note that I have just called all the weird Am chords "Am", so they can be
played as Am-002210, 577555, or 007555; Asus2-002200; A7sus2-002000,
Amadd9-577500 or 007500; or Am7add9-575555 or 005500. I have, however, noted
a couple of especially weird ones - Am11-00543x and Am6 002212.
The E type chords are E7-020130, 020100(E'), 076750 or 076707(E*);
E7+9-07678x; and E7-9 - 07676x.
The chords for the chorus are Dm-xx0231 or x57765; A/C#-x42225 or x42255;
C-x32010; Bb9-5 (my favourite!)-010110; then E7' and Am as shown above.
There is a chord progression in the first two choruses (but not the last)
at the point marked with asterisks - goodness knows what the chords should
be called: A-x07655, ?-x07676, ?-x07565, ?-x05433.
The chords for the bridge ("Is this the end of..") go along these lines
|-------|-------|-------|-0--0--|-------|-------|-4-----|-5--5--|
|-6-----|-5--5--|-3--0--|-3--1--|-6-----|-5--5--|-3-----|-5--5--|

The chords for the line "Those sad rows of houses.." onwards are:
Dsus4-xx0233, Dm-xx0231, Cadd9-x32030, C-x32010, Bbadd9-688768, Bb-688766
E7sus4-022435, E7-022434.

Another song that demonstrates the power of underplaying.
One acoustic guitar does this -
+ + + + + +
|-------------|-------------|
|-------------|-------------|
|-------------|-------------| (repeat ad infinitum)
|-4---4-2-----|-4---4-2-----|
|-------------|-------------|

throughout. One electric with its tone control turned down does this -
(-------------Intro-------------)
+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
|-------|-------|-------|-------|-------|-------|-------|-------|-------|

|-0-----|-0-----|-0-----|-------|-0-----|-0-----|-0-----|-0-----|-------|
(etc) throughout with plam muting - follow the chords, obviously. The only
variation in this is on the F# chord in the chorus -
+ + + + + + + + + + + +

|-------|-------|-------|-------|
|-------|-------|-2-----|-------|
|-4-4-4-|-4-4-4-|-0-----|-------|
|-2-2-2-|-2-2-2-|-------|-------|
There is also another part which I think is a guitar, but a pretty strange
sounding one. I suspect that it must be using a volume pedal or else some
kind of sustaining device like an E-bow, a Fernandes sustainer pickup or
good old fashioned compression. Once again, it's wonderfully underplayed,
so tabbing it out completely would be pointless.
However, it comes in on the second half of the first verse and goes
something like this -
