West End Riot
The Living End
Tabbed by: Dave H. - daveo@bored.com
Here is the utterly complete tab for West End Riot for both Bass and Guitar.
I'm not 100% sure about everything, but i guarantee most of this tab is correct
enough that it's nearly impossible to tell the difference. I play this song a
lot, and this is exactly how i do it, down to the last detail. Spread the joy
of this song by performing it!
Email me if you have anything to say.
Now let's get started.
Symbols:
* - harmonic
h - hammer on
p - pull off
/ - slide
b - bend
r - release bend
~n - grace note; play at the nth fret a bit before marked.
-~- - a ~ in mid-tab just means that the fret struck most recently is still ringing
I think that's all that's important. Now for the actual song.
Intro:
guitar (play 4 times)
e--------------------7-----7-----7--|
b--8-8-8-7-7-7-8-8-8-----8-----8----|
g--9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9---9-----9------|
d-----------------------------------|
a-----------------------------------|
e-----------------------------------|
bass (play twice)
g-----------------------------------|
d--2-2-2----------------------------|
a-----------------------------------|
e-----------------------------------|
g-----------------------------------|
d-----------------------------------|
a--2-2-2----------------------------|
e-----------------------------------|
2nd Intro (play twice):
guitar
e-------------------------------------|
b--8-8-7-7----------------------------|
g----------9-9-7-7--------------------|
d------------------9-9-7-7------------|
a--------------------------10-10-9-9--|
e-------------------------------------|
e-----------------------------------|
b-----------------------------------|
g-----------------------------------|
d-----------------------------------|
a------2-2-3-3---------2-2-3-3------|
e--0-0---------3-2-0-0---------3-2--|
meanwhile bass plays this until the chorus:
g-----------------------------------|
d-----------------------------------|
a------2-2-3-3---------2-2-3-3------|
e--0-0---------3-2-0-0---------3-2--|
End of 2nd Intro:
guitar (let ring)
e--0--|
b--0--|
g--0--|
d--2--|
a--x--|
e--0--|
at the end of the 2nd intro, the guitar plays this and lets ring for 4 bars.
Then turn down the volume on your guitar completely and hit the high E string harmonic:
e--12*--|
b-------|
g-------|
d-------|
a-------|
e-------|
gradually turn the volume back up over the next 4 bars.
then, Pre-Mid-Verse pickup Chords:
e---------|
b---5--5--|
g---4--4--|
d---2--2--|
a---------|
e---------|
then a slight variation on the intro. You should miss the first two notes the
first time this is played, because the chords should ring a little. Besides, the
bass should have this concept covered.
Mid-Verse (8 times):
e-------------------|
b-------------------|
g-------------------|
d--2-2---------5-4--|
a------2-2-3-3------|
e-------------------|
Mid-Verse 2 (3 times):
e-(3)-(3)---------------------------|
b--5---5----------------------------|
g--4---4----------------------------|
d--2---x-------5-4-2-2---------5-4--|
a------2---3-3---------2-2-3-3------|
e-----------------------------------|
the top notes are unnecessary, but they certainly don't hurt.
Pre-Chorus (3 times):
"ba - ttleground"
e------------------|
b------------------|
g--7-----8-8-------|
d--8-----9-9-------|
a--8-----9-9-------|
e--6-----7-7-------|
bass
g------------------|
d------------------|
a------------------|
e--6-----7-7-------|
Pre-Chorus 2:
e-------------------|
b--------7-~-~-~-~--|
g------8---~-~-~-~--|
d----7-----~-~-~-~--|
a-------------------|
e--7-------~-~-~-~--|
bass
g-------------------|
d-------------------|
a--2-2-0-0----------|
e----------3-3-2-2--|
hold the chord and let all notes ring. Now for the verse, which is the same as
the intro. The arpeggio should match up with the first 4 notes the bass plays.
Chorus 1 (3 times):
guitar
e-------------------|
b--5----------------|
g--4---4---5--------|
d--2---4---5---5----|
a------2---3---5----|
e--------------3----|
bass
g--------------0----|
d--2----------------|
a------2---3--------|
e-------------------|
Chorus 2:
e-------------------|
b--7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7--|
g--7-7-7-7-8-8-8-8--|
d--7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7--|
a-------------------|
e-------------------|
bass
g-------------------|
d--0---0---1---1----|
a-------------------|
e-------------------|
This chorus, as a whole, is played twice (aaabaaab). I'm not sure about the
guitar part here, as it's pretty hard to hear, but this sounds damn good if
played well.
Bridge:
This part is pretty hard, but it isn't too bad. just get your fingers in the
proper chord positions and pick. It's important to mute the notes properly so
they don't ring when you're doing the bass runs. I put it all one one staff
right above the bass so the rhythm would be easy to figure out. the rhythm isn't
that bad.

this is played really fast, twice as fast as i've been marking so far, pretty
much. just listen to it. the fingering i have is correct. Also, pick the E minor
chord at the end from highest note to lowest. Believe it or not, the bend is
hard to get right. practice it slowly.

as at the beginning of verse 1, let chord ring for 4 bars. turn down volume,
then hit the b harmonic, then turn back up. same deal. Go back to the verse.

easy stuff.
Instead of playing the last set of notes (d) on the fourth repeat,
there are chords. See below.
interlude chords:
e---------|
b------5--|
g--7---4--|
d--7---2--|
a--5------|

you might be thinking "I have an easier way to play these chords." I find this
is the best way. There's a way to play them that encourages sliding, which
completely ruins the little interlude.
g---------|
d--0---2--|

outro 2:

e------0----------------------------|
b------0-------3-------5-------7----|

e-----------------------------------|
g-----------------------------------|
d-----------------------------------|
a----------2---2---3---3---5---5----|
e--0---0----------------------------|
skip the first chord the first time in favor of letting
the second interlude chord ring a bit longer.

finally, chorus, then the bridge again. Then the song is over.
